Formulating the 3D acoustic wave equation in Hamiltonian form yields direct access to the generalized eld momentum, making it possible to monitor local energy ux directly and locally impose a direction on this ux. This provides a way to tweak the energy near the boundary and implement good absorbing boundary conditions using only the lowest-order paraxial equation. The overall method is well-posed by energy criteria and high-quality.
